Tetracyclic antidepressant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tetracyclic antidepressants are psychotropic drugs that are used to treat depressive disorders . They represent a further development of the tricyclic antidepressants , to which they are structurally and pharmacologically similar. In their chemical structure they do not have three but four ( condensed ) carbon rings. In the case of mianserin and mirtazapine, their effect is presumably based on a blockade of presynaptic α 2 receptors and postsynaptic 5-HT 2 and 5-HT 3 receptors. A certain inhibition of the reuptake, especially of noradrenaline from the synaptic cleft , may play a role.
