Texa Chapel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Texa Chapel is a now in ruins church that was located in the north of the now uninhabited Scottish Hebridean island of Texa . She was consecrated to the Virgin Mary . The ruins are classified as B in the Scottish Monuments List .

history

Although there is evidence that Texa is identical to the oidecha from monastic writings, the place where Saint Kenneth (Cainneach), a companion of Saint Columban , stopped on his journey from Iona in the 7th century, no early Christian activities on Texa have been proven become. It is not known exactly when the church was built. However, since a donation of a cross is recorded at the end of the 14th century and the oldest cross plate found there dates from the 1380s, this indicates that it was completed during this period. The island of Texa belonged to the church as well as the lands of Cragabus . The fact that the church was not mentioned by the Irish missionary Cornelius Ward , who arrived on Texa in 1625, could indicate that it was already in ruins at that time.

description

The building is on a hill near the island's landing site. It appears to have been the center of an agricultural settlement. The church stood on an area of 28 × 19 m 2 , which was enclosed by a wall. It measured 8.8 × 4.1 m 2 and had walls about 80 cm thick. Light entered through angular windows in the north and south walls, which were probably rectangular and framed by sandstone. The entrance was on the south side. A small outbuilding was directly connected to the southwest corner. To the south was the cemetery. Only remains of the wall remain from the church today.
