Cragabus is a small scattered settlement on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located about 3.5 kilometers west of the Port Ellen ferry terminal and 15 km south of the island's capital Bowmore in the north of the Oa Peninsula . The town was historically divided into Upper , Middle and Lower Cragabus . The closest settlement is Coillabus, about a kilometer to the southwest . Two kilometers to the southeast is the abandoned village of Ballychatrigan .
Today Cragabus consists of only a few inhabited houses. In 1861, 90 people were still counted in Cragabus, divided into 17 families. In the 19th century there was probably a whiskey distillery in Cragabus for a short time . In 1967 traces of a historical group of huts near Cragabus were described, the existence of which is not certain.
prehistory
The remains of three Cairns have been discovered in Cragabus . One measures around 17 m and is 1.2 m high. In a prominent position on a hilltop there is a second cairn, about eight meters high, about one meter high, but which has been largely destroyed. The third cairn is the Clyde Tomb by Cragabus . The chambers of a gallery were built on an area of 4.8 × 1 m 2 . In the area there are menhirs , which probably belong to the complex. Furthermore, north of Lower Cragabus there are the remains of a summer willow hut ( English Shieling hut ).
