The Thames House has been the headquarters of the British secret service MI5 since 1994 .

The two-part building is located in the British capital, London, on the north bank of the Thames at Lambeth Bridge (at the intersection of Millbank and Horseferry Road). It was built from 1929 to 1930 by the company John Mowlem & Co in the neoclassical tradition of Edwin Lutyens . The plans come from Sir Frank Baines of the Government's Office of Works. The area was previously considered poor, the previous buildings were largely destroyed in a flood on January 7, 1928. At the same time as the Thames House, several other representative administrative buildings were built in the neighborhood (including the similar Nobel House on the other side of Horseferry Road). The Thames House initially served as the headquarters of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd (ICI) , later it was used by the Warburg Library, the International Nickel Company of Canada and the Department of Energy, among others. After extensive modernizations and renovations, it has served as the headquarters of the domestic secret service MI5 since 1994 .
