The Brothers (ship)

The Brothers ( The Brothers ) was a 40-ton schooner , which in Bass Strait near Tasmania in 1816 under the command of Captain William Hovell was shipwrecked. On June 25, 1816, the ship anchored near the Kent Group in Bass Strait when a storm came up from the east, the anchor chain broke and the ship crashed on the coast. The cargo consisted of 20 tons of salt and 800 bushels of wheat that went overboard. The seaman Daniel Wheeler drowned. For ten weeks the survivors ate wheat washed up on the beach and other edibles until theywere rescuedby the brig Spring under the command of Captain Bunster. The survivors reached Sydney on September 6, 1816.
