The distinctive red restaurant building

The The Crab Cooker is a well known restaurant in Newport Beach in the US state of California . It mainly specializes in fish dishes and many more types of seafood . The restaurant opened in 1951. It is located on the corner of 22nd Street and Newport Boulevard on the Balboa Peninsula .

history

The restaurant's story begins in the late 1940s when carpenter Bob Roubian helped redesign a local fish market. Three years later, the owner finally offered him to take over the business. Roubian accepted the offer because he spent a lot of time fishing himself .

The eatery is located in a former Bank of America branch . The original 158 square meter house has recently been expanded by an additional 836 square meters. Since 1992 there has also been a branch in nearby Tustin .

Due to the popularity of the Crab Cooker, long queues leading to the street are quite common. The restaurant made national headlines when the then US President Richard Nixon sent an escort to inquire whether an exception would be made for him in the waiting time. But the owner, Bob Roubian, replied that the president, like everyone else, would have to stand in line.

layout

The restaurant building, which is painted red, is decorated inside with all sorts of curious objects that create a very peculiar atmosphere. These include numerous paintings by well-known artists, individual ship accessories and a huge model of a shark . The design also includes countless postcards from tourists all over the world. A sign in the shape of a fish attached to the roof attracts attention.

Specialties

One of the most famous specialties of the house is the Manhattan Clam Chowder , a typical American clam soup. Furthermore, lobster, crabs, oysters, mussels, shrimp, salmon fillets and various other types of fresh fish are served.

In art and media

The fictional Crab Shack restaurant from the Newport Beach television series OC, California is said to represent the real Crab Cooker. As usual in the series, well-known attractions or buildings in the city are integrated into the plot. However, the shooting mostly takes place in Manhattan Beach to the north .
