The Downliners Sect

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Downliners Sect was a British rhythm and blues or beat band from the 1960s .

history

The band was founded in London in 1963. They played loud, weird and wild rock - so for many in England at the time they were nothing but a joke, most likely a crude caricature of all that was bad about British R&B. Their music was most likely an over-the-top version of the early Pretty Things and Rolling Stones sounds, R&B classics with merciless rhythm chords and loud, shrill vocals. Their idols were Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley , and they managed to complete the "simple Diddley beat". Their only placement in the British singles charts came in 1964 with the title Baby What's Wrong , which came to number 29.

Their second LP "The Country Sect" (1965) anticipated country rock for years, but the next album "The Rock Sect's In" (1966) was clearly too late for the rebirth of rock and roll .

By the end of 1966, the hype was over and the band split up. In 1994 the CD "Singles - A's & B's" was released . Craine and Grant make several attempts to revive the band with new musicians and continue to make music to this day.
