The Hollywood Argyles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hollywood Argyles were an American musical group from Los Angeles , California .

history

Hollywood Argyles was initially nothing more than a name invented by Gary Paxton and producer Kim Fowley , under which the novelty song Alley-Oop, written by Dallas Frazier , became the number one hit on the Billboard charts and million-seller in mid-1960 .

Gary Paxton was contracted to Brent Records at the time, where he made recordings as a singer in the duo Skip & Flip , and so Alley-Oop could not be released under his name. The single was released on the record label "Lute".

On the recording were Gaynel Hodge (piano), Harper Cosby (bass), Ronnie Caleco (also Ronnie Silico, drums), Sandy Nelson ("garbage can" and "screams"), as well as background singers Dallas Fraizer, Buddy Mize, Scotty Turner and others involved. Kim Fowley produced the recording, Gary Paxton was lead singer and arranger.

After the song's great success, Paxton put together a band under the name Hollywood Argyles, whose line-up varied from case to case; some musicians were also permanently employed. Other recordings that appeared on The Hollywood Argyles Featuring Gary Paxton along with Alley-Oop and his B-side Sho 'Know a Lot About Love included Ted Marsh (vocals), Deary Weaver (guitar), Marshall Leib (piano ), Gary "Spider" Webb (drums), Bobby Rey (saxophone) and Ted Winters (bass).

Paxton made other records as Hollywood Argyles before the name finally faded into insignificance.
