Sandy Nelson (born December 1, 1938 in Santa Monica , California ; actually Sander L. Nelson ) is an American drummer . Between 1959 and 1964 he had nine instrumental drum titles in the US charts . His title Let There Be Drums reached number one on the Australian singles chart in 1962 and number 3 in the UK. From 1999 it was part of the live repertoire of the band Queen .

Life

Nelson attended the same high school as Jan Berry and Dean Torrence ( Jan and Dean ) and Kim Fowley . After graduating from school he played in the band Renegades , consisting of Richard Podolor , Bruce Johnston and Nick Venet . He also worked as a studio musician, including in 1958 for Phil Spector on To Know Him Is to Love Him by Teddy Bears , in 1960 on the number one hit Alley-Oop by the Hollywood Argyles produced by Kim Fowley and on various recordings by Gene Vincent .

1959 climbed his first single Teen Beat , where he, among others, surf music - guitarist Richie Allen was accompanied, to position four on the Billboard charts. This was followed by a solo career as an instrumental artist in the early 1960s . On his label Imperial Records he released the single Let There Be Drums in 1961 , which again reached the top 10. By 1964, seven more placements followed on the Billboard Hot 100, sometimes A- and B-side of the same single were in the charts. Between 1962 and 1966, eleven of his albums reached the Billboard 200 , the album Let There Be Drums rose to position six.

In late 1963 Nelson had a motorcycle accident as a result of which his right foot had to be amputated. He continued his career thereafter, but from the mid-1960s his publications were no longer commercially successful. The Hessian Broadcasting sat Nelson Title Drums a Go Go as a theme song for the weekday magazine program Happened - Recorded one which aired 1966-2000. … And Then There Were Drums is the signature tune of Wolf-Dieter Stubel's international hit parade , which was broadcast between 1967 and 1990 on NDR 2 and has been broadcast on Radio NORA since 2005 .

Nelson lives in Boulder City in the US state Nevada and released another album with Nelsonized in late 2008 .
