The International Graduate School of Science and Engineering

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Graduate School of Science and Engineering is an institution of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). It was founded in 2006 as part of Germany's Excellence Initiative . The aim of the Graduate School is to promote top-level interdisciplinary research in the natural and engineering sciences. The special thing about it is that very good students or postgraduates receive individual support. The aim is for the participant to create a doctorate that is characterized by its excellent quality. Both personally and scientifically, young researchers should have optimal development opportunities at TUM.

Preferred research fields of IGSSE are:

  • Computational Science & Engineering
  • Energy, Geodynamics & Environment
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Nanotechnology & Advanced Materials

The requirements of the Graduate School should meet the following criteria:

  • Interdisciplinary: Interdisciplinary research is a prerequisite for an IGSSE project. The aim is not only to work in an interdisciplinary manner, but also in a team-oriented manner with doctoral students, postdocs and professors.
  • International: An international research stay is compulsory for every IGSSE student. But not only the participants should gain foreign experience. Foreign partners of the Technical University of Munich can also participate in IGSSE projects in Germany and receive funding.
  • Gender balanced: In order to increase the still comparatively low number of women in technical and scientific professions, special consideration is given to the needs of women, parents and families.
  • Practical: The IGSSE projects are in close cooperation with partners from industry and other research areas. This should ensure the exchange between research and industry.

Mentoring

A mentoring program is an important part of IGSSE . Not only individual excellence should be promoted. Through a mentoring program, contacts to industry and science are intended to accelerate careers.

IGSSE organizational structure

The director is Ernst Rank from TUM. Michael Klimke acts as managing director. The scientific quality of IGSSE is to be guaranteed by the fact that almost all members of the board of directors are proven scientists and some of them lead IGSSE research groups themselves. The IGSSE doctoral students also have a vote on the board of directors, which ensures direct contact between the board and members.

Scholarships

In addition to the monthly grant, other funds are available for IGSSE scholarship holders. So z. B. the acquisition of necessary equipment and materials. An exemption from tuition fees is guaranteed for 6 semesters.
