The Knowe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Knowe is a villa in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The mansion for hat maker John Blair was built in three phases. The original villa was built between 1850 and 1853. The Scottish architect Alexander Thomson , who was working in John Baird's office at the time , was responsible for the design . Possibly The Knowe is Thomson's earliest independently planned building. The villa was expanded by Thomson in 1855. The Knowe was again expanded in 1899 by George Gunn and John Campbell McKellar .

description

The Knowe is located on Albert Drive in the southern Pollokshields district of Glasgow . Since the villa is set back from the road, it is closer to the backward Aytoun Road . It is designed in the historicist Italianate style with neo-Romanesque details. The original villa was roughly L-shaped and comprised a two-story tower. As a result of the extensions, the floor plan is significantly more complex. To the right and to the rear, flatter wings that come from the second construction phase are connected to the tower. The masonry consists of natural stone blocks of different sizes. The windows are partly designed with round arches with rusticated arches. The design of the lodge at the gate shows numerous parallels.
