The Path is a computer game by Tale of Tales that was released for PC and Mac in 2009. The game takes up the theme of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood , in which the player has to lead one of six sisters through the forest to the grandmother's house. The only instruction is not to leave the forest path to the house, but the player also has the option of exploring the forest away from the path.

The game was sold exclusively over the Internet, with a version for the Steam gaming platform also being offered. Even in the run-up to its publication, The Path was received extremely positively by the trade press, with a focus on the concept and the look of the game.

action

The action of the game is limited to a few frame elements, some of which are explained in the game and some are only explained on the associated homepage. The task is to lead one of six sisters from town over a forest path to the house of the sick grandmother to bring him wine and cake.

Gameplay

The only given instruction from the game is to go to the grandmother's house and not to leave the given path. However, it is always possible to step off the path and walk into the forest. After a certain distance from the path, however, it disappears and cannot be found again even by turning back; the forest closes in a loop.

In the forest itself, the player can find different places and objects, which are divided into different groups:

  • Places where a certain event happens: For each of the six sisters there is a specific place where they can trigger an event. Only three of these locations can be visited per round of the game, including the one specific to the girl in question and two more random ones.
  • Places where a symbol is unlocked in the basket: In addition to wine and cake, there is space in the player's basket for other objects that can be found in the forest and on the path during the game. Some can be found by all girls, others only by very specific ones.
  • Flowers: There are 144 flowers distributed in the forest that can be picked by the sisters and then appear on the edge of the basket
