Robert "Bobby" Pendragon, a junior high school student at Stony Brook, discovers that he is a "traveler" thanks to his uncle "Uncle Press". A traveler can switch to another time or to other planets ("flumen"). These times and planets are called territories . All living beings and territories together make up "Halla", the "Universe".

Bobby's uncle wants to travel to Denduron territory with Bobby, but disturbs his nephew while making out with Courtney Chetwynde, who has been in love with him since fourth grade. She escapes the house, and Bobby drives with his uncle Press to a subway station in New York , where he meets his future enemy Saint Dane for the first time . Saint Dane tries to throw all territories into chaos in order to usurp power over Halla. After this encounter, Press and Bobby “switch” to Denduron, where their first adventure awaits.

Every territory is always on the verge of tipping over into chaos, and it is mostly Saint Dane's fault. In every territory there is a traveler (in some also one of the older generation, e.g. 1st Earth or Cloral). The travelers all help each other and try to stop Saint Dane and get through the turning point positively. Bobby learns and develops many skills on the journey. He learns, for example, the gift of travelers to convince a person with willpower. He also learns a lot about different peoples, technologies, social structures, philosophies and traditions. He has to adapt to the environment in each territory to get closer to Saint Dane.
