The Speyside is whiskey distillery in Drumguish , the river Tromie in the region Speyside , Scotland , United Kingdom .
history
The distillery is one of the younger ones in Scotland. It was only founded in 1990 by George Christie. The name comes from an older distillery in Kingussie, which only existed from 1895 to 1911. A special feature are the rather small stills and the relatively low production capacity. There is a mash tun, 4 fermentation vats (20,000 l each), a wash still (13,000 l) and a spirit still (7,000 l). The water is drawn from an old mill feed . The distillery only has 4 employees who take over the entire production.
The whiskey
The distillery now calls its malts "Spey". This is to avoid confusion with other malts from the Speyside region. Before that, the ten and twelve year old standard bottlings were called "The Speyside", while those without an age were called "Drumguish". The Spey is colored and is not cold filtered.
The Tenné is aged in Bourbon barrels for at least eight years. This is followed by a six-month finish in port barrels. The Tenné is also available in cask strength.
The Trutina is aged in bourbon barrels.
The fumare comes from ex-bourbon barrels and is very smoky.
The Speyside 8 years (ex-Bourbon) has been replaced as the standard by The Spey 12 years (sherry). But he is back as Spey The Speyside 8.
The Spey 10 Limited Edition is aged exclusively in port wine barrels.
The Spey 18 comes from the sherry barrel.
The founders John and Robert Harvey are believed to be selecting the barrels for the Spey Chairman's Choice.
The Spey 2018 Release Spirit of Speyside Whiskey Festival SOSWF is strictly limited. It got a red wine finish.
Spey The Marriage 1815 Byron's Choice comes from the port wine barrels and is a reminder that the poet Lord Byron on the occasion of his wedding to King George III. a barrel of whiskey is said to have been given to the Speyside distillery.
A number of blends and Scott's Selection are also sold. There are also independent bottlings.
