The Third

The Third ( Japanese ザ ・ サ ー ド , Za Sādo ) is a light novel series by Ryō Hoshino with illustrations by Nao Gotō . It was also implemented as a manga and anime .

action

Many years after a war that wiped out 80% of the earth's population, the earth is watched over by a group of beings called "The Third". They got their name because of the red eye on their foreheads, which allows them to gain access to most computer systems. The story follows the adventures of Honoka and Bogie.

Honoka travels through the wasteland with her desert tank, controlled by the AI Bogie. She does a variety of jobs, such as clearing up oversized spiders to make a living. One night on her trip she meets a strange man who introduces himself as Ikus. After rescuing him from some giant ants, he asks Honoka to follow her on her journey to see more of the world. During her travels or at night, Honoka recites poems by a writer named "Dana Myfree".

Characters

Honoka ( 火 乃 香 )
She is the protagonist of the story. During her assignments, she carries a katana and various pistols with her. She is also known under the name Sword Dancer ( ソ ー ド ・ ダ ン サ ー ) because of her grace with the katana.
Honoka has an eye similar to that of the Third, but hers is blue. She does not have the skills of the Third, however her eye can detect signs of life and generate a power that can be used in combat. She is 17 in the anime and 15 in the manga.
Iks ( イ ク ス , Ikusu )
He is the mysterious man Honoka meets in the desert. Iks has a calm demeanor and seems harmless, but he is wanted by the Third, as nobody knows his intentions. He has healing abilities and over time it becomes clear that he is an alien sent to observe the earth.
Bogie ( ボ ギ ー , Bogī )
An AI that acts as a protector, advisor, and support to Honoka. It is deposited in a metal container with a green visor.
Zankan ( ザ ン カ ン )
He was one of the best mechanics and regularly did repairs on Honoka's desert tanks. He was traveling across the desert in a huge tank / crane. Eventually he was killed by a Blue Breaker for violating the Technos Taboo.
Jōganki ( 浄 眼 機 )
One of the thirds who is very interested in Honoka. He has considerable political influence among the thirds.
Millie ( ミ リ ィ , Mirī )
A young girl who traveled through the desert with Zankan. She is cheerful and treats Honoka like a sister. After Zankan's death, she travels with Honoka.
Joey Toy ( ト イ ジ ョ ー イ , Toi Jōi )
A boy Honoka meets at the beginning of the story. He is a mechanic and would like to follow his example, Zankan. To do this, he goes to mechanics school while doing repairs for Honoka.
Paifū ( パ イ フ ウ )
A teacher at Millie's school who has what appears to be a sexual interest in Honoka. During her trip with Honoka, she reveals that she can sense chi . She also shows open hatred towards men and always carries a pistol with her.
Leon ( レ オ ン , Reon )
A cyborg from the great war. He is a hunter whose body is made of a mysterious liquid metal and can shoot laser beams from his fingers.

Light novel

The light novel series, written by Ryō Hoshino and illustrated by Nao Gotō, has been published in Dragon Magazine since March 1999 . So far, 9 novels, 6 short stories and 1 supplementary book have been published.

Manga

From October 2005 to October 2006, the manga The Third - Sabaku no Hoshi no Apprentice Girl ( ザ ・ サ ー ド 〜 砂 漠 の 星 の ア プ レ ン テ ィ ス ガ ー ル 〜 , Za Sādo - Sabaku no Hoshi no Apurentisu gāru , dt Desert ”) by Yōichi Ariko in the manga magazine Dragon Age and summarized in two tankōbon . In North America, the manga was licensed by Tokyopop .

Sajō no Yume ( 砂 上 の 夢 , dt. "Dream on the sand") by Yūko Sasaki was chosen as the opening title . As the end title of episodes 1 to 12 the title ING by Super Flying Boy ( 超 飛行 少年 ) was used, for episodes 13 to 24 Late Show , which also comes from Super Flying Boy.
