The Ukrainians are a British band that mix Ukrainian folk with rock music . The band members are Len Liggins, Roman Remeynes and Peter Solowka.

history

The Ukrainians emerged in 1989 from an idea by the band The Wedding Present . They wanted to introduce a Ukrainian part for a BBC show, which they found with Len Liggins. The recorded song was a success. Therefore, more songs were recorded and released as an EP in 1990 with the title Oi Divchino (My Sweet Girl). The video for the title song was shot by the band in Kiev ; it was probably the first video by a western band in the Eastern Bloc . The single was named "Single Of The Week" by the renowned NME magazine .

This was followed by the first album called The Ukrainians . This was a success mainly in Europe , which led to a major tour. The sporting goods company Nike had the Ukrainians musically underlay a commercial with Sergej Bubka .

In early 1993 the Ukrainians released the EP Pisni Iz The Smiths with four titles by The Smiths in Ukrainian. In the same year, the band's second album, Vorony , followed. This was named "Album Of The Month" in Great Britain. This was followed by an extensive tour through Europe from Spain to the Ukraine. Recordings of this tour were released on a vinyl record limited to 1,000 copies.

In October 1994 the album Kultura was released . The Ukrainians severely reduced their tours for health reasons. In memory of the Chernobyl reactor disaster , the band released a single ( Radioactivity ) in 1996 , the proceeds of which went to the victims of the accident. In 1998 an EP called Prince was released, on the cover versions of the musician Prince can be heard.

There was a longer break in which the musicians went their separate ways. It wasn't until 2002 that the band returned with an EP, which was released on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the British Queen and the 25th birthday of the Sex Pistols and was called Anarchy in the UK . After the album Respublika from 2003 and a live album in 2004, the Ukrainians are touring Europe again.
