Thea Maass (born July 14, 1908 , † March 2, 1989 ) was a German dancer, ballet master, dance teacher and choreographer.

Thea Maas studied with Mary Wigman . After her active time as a dancer at various German theaters, in 1953 she and Aenne Goldschmidt set up the dance group in the GDR State Folk Art Ensemble (later the GDR dance ensemble). In collaboration with Goldschmidt, she studied the forms of German folk dance for years .

Their folklore choreographies have become one of the "classics" of stage folklore, such as For example, the Palatinate suite “When the grapes ripen in autumn” or the Bavarian suite “When the grouse is courting”. She was the founder of the folklore dance ensemble at the TU Dresden, which experienced a profound human and artistic enrichment from decades of creative collaboration with her. It lives on in the preservation of their realistic style of interpretation and the careful maintenance of their extraordinary dance design.

In honor of her life's work, the folklore dance ensemble of the TU Dresden named itself “Thea Maass” in 1990.
