Theater of the Gesellenverein Graz

The Gesellenverein's theater is a former theater in Graz .

history

View from the gallery

The appearance of the four-storey building is determined by the late Biedermeier adaptation of 1859, based on plans by the renowned Graz architect Carl Aichinger. Both the four-axis street facade and the nine-axis side front are evenly divided horizontally by the base beam cornices. In essence, however, the building goes back to the 16th century, as can still be seen from the lancet vaults on the first 2 floors and in the basement. The stairwell with a four-pillar staircase, on the other hand, comes from the late Biedermeier renovation phase.

Location and surroundings

The three-sided building under a hipped roof surrounding a small inner courtyard at Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai 50 on a steep slope is positioned directly on the slope of the Schlossberg .

meaning

Alexander Girardi

The theater is still largely in its original state. Despite its long use as a dance school, it was largely retained in its original form. The artistically and culturally significant theater hall with Corinthian wooden columns and gallery designed by the architect Carl Aichinger is unique in Graz.

Alexander Girardi , the Austrian actor and operetta singer (tenor), appeared in public for the first time as an actor in this theater.

use

The theater was also used as such by the Graz journeyman's association from 1860 to 1914. From 1916 to 2018 it was used as a dance school room (Nebel dance school). The theater hall is currently not in use.
