The Theater des Lachens is a free puppet theater based in Frankfurt (Oder) at Ziegelstraße 31. The theater mainly deals with the genre of puppets and puppet theater and offers a regular program for adults and children. In addition, the theater is represented at numerous puppet theater festivals in Germany and abroad. history

Today's theater emerged from what was then the Frankfurt State Puppet Theater . The first director of the puppet theater in the former EFKA cinema building was Irene Merzdorf (1975). The theater was threatened with closure at the beginning of the 1990s, and it did not seem possible to continue it without the support of the municipality, the state and rent-free use of the venue. In 1992 a group of players and employees took over the gaming facility that had been made available for use by the municipality. They founded the "Small Theater, Puppet and Drama eV". The then artistic director Astrid Griesbach shaped this theater with her unmistakable signature, tragedy and comedy and made it known beyond the city limits with her productions such as “Danton's Death”. Since 1996, the Theater des Lachens has been playing in one of the most beautiful theaters in Brandenburg, the old machine room of the Gerstenberger Höfe at Ziegelstrasse 31.
