The Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte is the central production and communication location for the performing arts in Berlin.

history

The Theaterhaus Mitte was founded in 1992. In 2000, people moved to a former school on Koppenplatz, which had been closed due to a lack of students, but with the stipulation that rooms should be made available for school operations when the number of students increased again. From 2000 to 2008 there was a cooperation project between the Central District Office and the Förderband e. V. - Kulturinitiative Berlin. In January 2008, the district office in Mitte announced that it would end the cooperation agreement for the Theaterhaus Mitte on Koppenplatz in June 2008. Because of the increased number of pupils, a primary school should move back into the building, initially a branch in the form of two classes. Until an independent school was established, there should be parallel use of the school and the theater, which was actually the case by the end of June 2009.

A user initiative was founded in April 2008 and sent an open letter to the governing mayor of Berlin, the cultural policy spokesman for the political groups in the Berlin House of Representatives and the mayor of the Mitte district of Berlin, demanding that the responsible cultural office be responsible for maintaining the building . The letter was co-signed by over 7,000 people within 6 weeks.

In the following year the parliament was convinced of the importance of the production and communication center for the performing arts in Berlin.

Since 2010, the Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte has received funding from the State of Berlin from the Senate Chancellery for Cultural Affairs.

At the same time, with the support of the Mitte district of Berlin, it was possible to find a new location for the theater.

Since June 2009 the theater has been located at Wallstrasse 32, in the historic area of Fischerinsel on the border between Mitte and Kreuzberg. In the 5-storey building there are 23 rehearsal stages and the “Werkstattbühne 003” theater.

Current usage

The house is also very well used at the new, expanded location. Around 6000 artists work there every year.

In 2011, 320 productions were made in the theater, including around 260 productions for Berlin venues and 60 productions for premieres in Germany and around the world.

With its inexpensive rehearsal rooms, its advisory and networking offers and its extensive international and intercultural cooperation projects, the Theaterhaus Berlin has become a "home base" for theater artists in Berlin and a contact point for artists from all over the world.

In addition, around 100 public events of all genres take place annually in the Theaterhaus Berlin, both on the spacious outdoor area of the theater house and in smaller stages in the house and in the studio theater "003".
