Thebais (art)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thebaïs (Θηβαϊς) are some pictorial representations of the hermit life. They got their name after special hermitages that were located in the Egyptian region of Thebais . Well-known anchorites in this region were, among others, the first hermit Paulus of Thebes and Antonius the Great , whose life was therefore particularly often received in art.
