The Theodor Zeise GmbH & Co was created by entrepreneur Theodor Zeise 1868 in Altona adElbe founded. The company developed into the largest German ship propeller factory until it went bankrupt in 1979. There were propeller up to a total weight of 61 tons produced m and a diameter up to 9.4. The Maxim Gorkiy and the supertanker Tina Onassis were propelled with Zeis screws. In the field of the design and calculation of propellers for high performance ( super tankers , container ships , Ro / Ro ships, gas tankers), Zeise was a world leader thanks to the designers Hans Brehme and Klaus Meyne. Zeise was the first propeller company to develop the hydraulic propeller shaft assembly and the wing-hub model.

In 1975 Zeise got into economic difficulties due to high reject rates. The company was then taken over by the much smaller Lübeck competitor, Schaffran Lehne & Co , but remained legally independent as a company. In the shipbuilding crisis of 1977/78, there were again difficulties due to a lack of orders, which could not be resolved despite the support of the Hamburg Senate. Zeise had to file for bankruptcy in 1979 in the 112th year of its existence.

Today the listed former factory halls of the Zeise company house galleries, restaurants and the zeise cinemas .
