Thomas Hanghey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Hanghey was a British , presumably Scottish , football player in the position of defender .

Hanghey came to Mexico for professional reasons in the late 19th century to work in the Santa Gertrudis de Yute factory in Orizaba . According to the records of the Libro de Oro del Fútbol Mexicano , Hanghey was Duncan Macomish's most important companion when the Orizaba AC was founded in 1898 and its football department in 1901.

With the Orizaba AC team, which he co-founded, he went down in the history of Mexican football as Mexico's first football champion .

Unlike many of the other players in the 1902/03 championship team who returned to their home countries (Scotland and England) soon after completing their careers, Hanghey - along with fellow countryman Duncan Macomish and English brothers John and Thomas Hogg - stayed on top of his professional activity in Mexico.
