Thomas J. Richardson

Thomas Joseph Richardson (* 1961 ) is an American computer scientist.

Richardson holds a PhD and is a Qualcomm vice president of engineering .

He is an expert in iterative coding processes and, together with Rüdiger Urbanke, was largely responsible for the renaissance of low-density parity check codes (LDPC), which can operate close to the capacity limit of communication channels (Shannon limit). With Urbanke he wrote a textbook on coding theory.

In 2002 he received the IEEE Information Theory Society Paper Award with Urbanke and in 2014 both received the Richard W. Hamming Medal . He is a fellow of the IEEE . In 2011 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering .
