Thomas Nimene Botoe , (born December 25, 1912 in Liberia , † May 12, 1969 in Monrovia ), was a popular Liberian politician and influential member of the Kru people .

Life

Thomas N. Botoe became politically active as a representative of his ethnic group - the Kru - and made a career as a local politician in Monrovia in the late 1940s. He became the spokesman for the population under President William S. Tubman and evidently made enemies with the attempt to improve the living conditions of the indigenous population .
When several assassins gathered in the presidential palace to murder Tubman on June 22, 1955, the assassination attempt was foiled by the president's bodyguards. The prisoners, who were threatened with torture and intimidation, accused Nete Sie Brownell (Attorney General of Liberia), S. David Coleman (Secretary of State) and the lawyer and advisor to the opposition parties Raymond Horace as leading a conspiracy to overthrow Tubman. These men were immediately arrested, tortured, found guilty of conspiracy and treason, and sentenced to long prison terms. Even Thomas N. Botoe was made in this regard in court and received a long prison sentence.
Probably before his death in May 1969, Thomas N. Botoe was pardoned and released from prison. He died on May 12, 1969 in Monrovia. Botoe was posthumously rehabilitated by Tubman's successor, President William R. Tolbert, Jr.
