Thomas of Harqel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas von Harqel (late 6th / early 7th century) was a Syrian Orthodox ("Jacobite") bishop of Mabbug (today: Manbidsch ). From there he was expelled at the time of Emperor Maurikios (before 602) and emigrated to Egypt. Later he was in the retinue of the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch (probably Athanasios I. Gammolo ) in union negotiations under Emperor Herakleios .

Before he was promoted to bishop, Thomas had studied Greek and lived as a monk. In his Alexandrian refuge, Thomas completed his own review of the Syrian New Testament ("Heraklensis") based on Philoxenia (revision of the Syrian New Testament by Philoxenus of Mabbug ) and Greek manuscripts together with colleagues . (Partly rated as an independent new translation) He also mediated from there in union negotiations (609/610, so still under Emperor Phocas ).
