St. Thomas Church (Elmshorn)
The Evangelical Lutheran St. Thomas Church is located in a residential area north of Elmshorn city center, the settlement. It was inaugurated in 1964, the plans were drawn up by the Elmshorn architect Werner Thee and equipped with its distinctive, stand-alone tower, which can still be seen from afar.
The sacred space is equipped with a beautiful, two-manual Beckerath organ from 1966, it has 2226 pipes and was made in Hamburg. The stained glass windows behind the altar were made by the artist Charles Crodel . The candlestick next to the altar was made by the blacksmith Henning Holm. The wedding chairs are unique pieces by the Großbuchwald artist Marais Meyer. He made them from a single elm.
The community has around 3300 members.
Namesake
The Apostle Thomas . He only believed in the resurrection when he was allowed to touch Jesus' wounds ( John 20:24, 29 LUT ). According to legend, he later proselytized in India and suffered a martyr's death there.
Partnerships
The community maintains an intensive partnership with its Evangelical Lutheran. Partner community in Loitoktok ( Kenya ), this partnership has existed since 1995. There have already been a few visits by delegations from both countries. In 2004 there was a delegation of young people from the community in Loitoktok and in 2006 a delegation of Kenyan young people in Elmshorn. The Thomas Congregation also maintains contact with the Reformation Congregation in Beit Jallah Palestine .
