The Thormann fountain

The Thormann Fountain is a fountain on Augsburg's Königsplatz . It consists of a low circular water basin with a diameter of 12 meters. In the middle there is a large boulder from which the water fountain emerges. The fountain is under monument protection .

history

The fountain was built by the engineer Alfred Thormann in 1880 when the Königsplatz was laid out after the Gögginger Tor was demolished and designed as a park to serve as a “green quiet zone” in the new center of the already hectic city. It is considered to be the first concrete structure in Augsburg. Thormann donated the fountain to the city and wanted to use the building to demonstrate the suitability of the then still new building material concrete. The inscription "Alfred Thormann Augsburg 1880" on the edge of the pool reminds of this.

On the occasion of Augsburg's 2000th anniversary in 1985, Ignaz Walter donated the complete refurbishment of the fountain. For the renovation of Königsplatz between 2011 and 2013, it was temporarily dismantled and then rebuilt.
