from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ignaz Walter (born July 10, 1936 in Augsburg ) is a German entrepreneur . He was a partner and until July 1996 Chairman of the Board of Directors of Walter Bau AG , after which he became Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

Life

Walter attended school from 1942 to 1950 and then began training as a bricklayer . From 1951 to 1954 he made up his university entrance qualification and then studied civil engineering and architecture until 1958 . From 1958 he initially worked as an employee and in 1962 founded an architecture and engineering office.

Ignaz Walter developed Walter Bau AG over the decades from 1970 to 2000 into a global construction company that employed more than 50,000 people in its heyday. Outstanding projects include the renovation of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche in Dresden, the ICE route Cologne-Frankfurt, the construction of subways in Seattle, Delhi and Algiers, numerous highways, large bridges, tunnels and dams.

In addition to the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon, 1st Class and the Bavarian Order of Merit , Walter was also honored for his scientific work. From 1997 to 2005 he was President of the German Construction Industry and a member of various supervisory and administrative boards.

In 1999 Ignaz Walter bought the Glaspalast Augsburg . In 2002 he opened his private art collection in the Walter Art Museum and the Noah Gallery also settled in the building.

In 2005 Walter Bau AG had to file for bankruptcy. Walter blamed the banks for the bankruptcy.

Instead of a restructuring, which had to be given priority according to the bankruptcy code, the company was broken up through sales from the bankruptcy estate and numerous executives were enticed away by competing companies. The latter was declared unlawful by the Federal Labor Court many years later in a long-standing legal dispute, but the claim was dismissed because the damage could not be quantified.

In 2008 Ignaz Walter bought back his former company headquarters for 8.25 million euros.

Since July 2011, Walter has been trying to collect independent entrepreneurs with a large-scale advertising campaign in the "Entrepreneur Lodge" he initiated and thus create a lobby against the excessive and negative influence of the banks.

Walter has been married since 1960 and has three children with his wife.
