One speaks of thrombocytosis when the number of platelets ( thrombocytes ) in the blood exceeds the normal range (see blood count ). A distinction is made between reactive thrombocytosis, which is caused by other underlying diseases, and essential thrombocythemia , which is an independent bone marrow disease and is counted among the myeloproliferative diseases .

Reactive thrombocytosis can occur

Thrombocytosis after severe injuries

After severe injuries, an increase in platelet counts of over 1,000,000 per µl is observed in up to 1.4% of cases. Whether this increases the risk of complications such as thrombosis is controversial. Likewise, there is no agreement as to whether in these cases of thrombocytosis therapy z. B. with ASS is necessary.
