Vacant throne

A vacant throne is the time when a ruler is absent for a longer period or between his death and his successor's accession to the throne .

During this time the ruler cannot actively govern and is represented by an imperial administrator . In particular, this time without rulers is also called imperial vacancy .

A special variant of the vacancy from the throne is that of the Pope as head of the Vatican City . It is known as sedis vacancy .
