from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thulamela is an archaeological site in the northernmost part of the Kruger National Park near Camp Punda Maria , the park entrance Pafuri in South Africa .

Thulamela ( Venda : "Place of Birth") is a stone fortification on a hill on the Luvuvhu River , which is surrounded by the remains of houses. Thulamela was inhabited from about 1500 to 1600 and is attributed to the culture of Greater Zimbabwe .

Thulamela was discovered by rangers in 1991. During excavations, numerous artifacts that suggest extensive trade relationships and the processing of iron, as well as two graves were found. The walls were excavated and partly reconstructed true to the original. Thulamela is only accessible as part of guided excursions from Camp Punda Maria.
