Thunder is a free open source - content management system based on Drupal 8. The system is under the GNU General Public License provided.
The Thunder project was initiated in March 2016 by the German media group Hubert Burda Media . The Burda websites playboy.de, instyle.de, mein-schoener-garten.de, elle.de and freundin.de currently use the Thunder editorial system.
In addition to the basic functionalities of Drupal, Thunder has various modules that are provided by other publishers and industrial partners and that are tailored to the needs of publishers.
The publisher finances the Thunder Core Team, which maintains the distribution. As open source software, Thunder can be used and further developed by any user free of license fees. Burda wants to form a "coalition" that should be open to media companies, industrial partners and developers worldwide.
Drupal founder Dries Buytaert praised the establishment of a global, non-profit-making alliance of publishers in April.
