The Tibi Dam is located near Alicante in the Alicante province of the same name in Spain . It is one of the oldest dams in Europe and was built between 1580 and 1594 by order of the city of Alicante and on the orders of King Philip II (Felipe II) about 25 km above Alicante to dam the Monnegre and Verde rivers. The construction cost was 58,000 Valencian pounds.

Dam wall of the Tibi Dam

The dam , an arched weight wall made of stone blocks, blocks a narrow valley and is 42 meters high. (Some sources speak of a height of 46 m.) For a long time, until 1856/64, it was the highest dam in Europe. At the top of the wall, it is 65 meters long (or 83 meters). The lower length is given in the various sources as 10 or 20 meters, the thickness as 30 meters. The building is now a national monument.

The wall has a passage that is 4.8 m² on the water side and 23.6 m² on the air side. Water can be withdrawn from 52 different openings in a vertical extraction shaft.

The accumulated water surface of the reservoir is 50 hectares and can hold 5.4 million cubic meters of water. Other sources speak of 2 or 3.7 million m³. The water was used to irrigate arable land in Alicante, Mutxamel, San Juan and El Campello. At that time water rights could be bought by the hour.
