Depth dose curve

In the context of radiation therapy, the depth dose curve (TDK for short) is the course of the dose in the depth along the central beam . The depth dose curve, together with the transverse profile, is a very important reference point for the correct planning of the irradiation .

In the depth dose curve, the relative dose is plotted against the depth in water (as tissue equivalent). In the diagram, the respective dose structure of the radiation qualities and their range can be seen. The maximum of the depth dose curve is determined by the mean range of the secondary electrons from the layers of the irradiated medium near the surface and shifts into the depth with increasing photon energy. For the regular constancy tests prescribed for the clinical use of radiation planning systems, calculated and measured depth dose curves are compared with one another.
