A deep-shaft reactor is a special high-pressure reactor , patented in 1996 , with which chemical reactions can be carried out in a liquid medium under high pressure.

The operating pressure required in the reaction zone is generated, without the use of high pressure pumps, solely by the hydrostatic pressure at the bottom of a borehole. Therefore, such reactors often have a depth of about 1200-1500 m and accordingly an operating pressure of over 100  bar . The development of the reactor took place in the 1990s in the Mannesmann - AG in 1994 and was the patent registered. The patent office granted the patent with no. DE4427844C1 and published it on February 8, 1996 in the patent gazette .

This type of reactor is used in the treatment of sewage sludge in the wet oxidation process, where the high pressure and temperature are used so that organic substances break down and dissolved heavy metals are bound to relatively harmless oxides.
