The Weißwasser zoo is a zoo in the East Saxon town of Weißwasser / Oberlausitz near the city center, immediately north of the Jahnteich in the Jahnpark.
It was founded in 1966 as an initiative of citizens, businesses and institutions of the city and is home to more than 75 species and races, including from Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, on an area of 6.5 hectares. The zoo takes part in the European Endangered Species Program and is home to a pair of the critically endangered Bali star . Its offspring have so far been unsuccessful.
Enclosures and facilities, some of which can be walked in, allow direct and close contact with some of these animal species.
In the mid-1990s, numerous enclosures and facilities were repaired, modernized or completely rebuilt.
At the beginning of 2003, the Weißwasser zoo was privatized. Since the zoo's 40th birthday in the summer of 2006, the zoo has had its own life-size mascot, Hedwig the owl, which is also visible in the zoo's logo.
