The Zabakuck zoo is a zoological facility in the village of Zabakuck in the Jerichower Land district in Saxony-Anhalt . It was officially registered as a zoo in 1970 and is one of the few faunistic facilities in the east of Saxony-Anhalt and in the west of the state of Brandenburg. The zoo was rebuilt in 2013/2014 and is located directly at the old Zabakucker Castle. The zoo, which opened in 1974, has a size of approximately 3 hectares, on which around 120 animals from 29 species are kept. The Elbe-Havel-Werkstätten gGbmH has been the sponsor since 1998. At Am Park 11, 39307 Zabakuck, there is not only the zoo but also an animal shelter and boarding house.

Animals

One focus of the zoo is the keeping of old breeds of domestic animals that can be found on the red list, such as colorful Bentheim pigs, four-horned sheep and salmon chickens. Mouflon and fallow deer represent the native fauna.

Problem and future

Due to a long phase of scarcity of resources, some important renovation work, maintenance work and necessary renewals could not be carried out. Thanks to the help of some areas of the Elbe-Havel workshops and the tireless efforts of the employees in the zoo, it is thanks to them that the facility was kept in a well-maintained condition. The location and the nature of the ground in the park are also problematic. Since the zoo was partly built on swampy ground and loose soil, a layer of mud develops in the ungulate and cloven-hoofed animal enclosures when it rains for several days. For some time now, the intention has been to redesign the park and thus partially resolve some of these problems and to make the park more attractive to visitors again. This resolution was put into practice on August 29, 2013 when the construction of a zoo café began. A few weeks later, the construction of the new enclosures in the park began.
