Tight Fit was a British music project that existed between 1981 and 1983. Their greatest success was a cover version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight , with which they topped the UK charts in early 1982 .

Band history

After the Dutch music project Stars on 45 had great success in 1980 with danceable pop medleys, the Briton Ken Gold produced a 1960s medley with studio musicians entitled Back to the Sixties . Steve Grant, Denise Gyngell and Julie Harris were hired as protagonists for live performances - it is unclear whether these three actors also sang themselves. The first part of the medley reached number 4 in Great Britain in July 1981 , the second part followed in September and came to number 33. The corresponding album was also placed in the British Top 40.

Tight Fit had another hit with The Lion Sleeps Tonight . It is a reinterpretation of the often covered song Mbube , which the South African Solomon Linda wrote in 1939 for his band "Solomon Linda's Original Evening Birds". The single, produced by Tim Friese-Greene (later with Talk Talk ), rose to number 1 in the UK charts in March 1982 and climbed to the top 10 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Ex- City-Boy front man Roy Ward can be heard as a guest singer .

In May of that year, Fantasy Island was followed by a top five success in the United Kingdom. The piece of music penned by the Dutch musicians Martin Duiser and Piet Souer is in the original by the band The Millionaires, also from the Netherlands. As the last chart hit, Tight Fits, Secret Heart made the jump into the English charts, but did not get above number 41. Later releases flopped.

The two singing dancers were exchanged for Vicky Pemberton and Carol Stevens before the project ended in the spring of 1983. Steve Grant was later a member of a disco band called Splash and worked as a solo musician and accompanist for Eartha Kitt .
