Tikar is a language that belongs to the branch of the southern Semibantu languages, which are also referred to as bantoid languages based on their relationship with the actual Bantu languages .

There are several dialects:

  • Twumwu (also Tumu , language of the Tikar of Bankim )
  • Tige (language of the Tikar of Ngambe )
  • Nditam
  • Kong
  • Mankim
  • Gambai
  • Bandobo (it is still unclear whether it is a dialect or a separate language)

A small number of literary writings and publications exist in the Tikar language.

Most Tikar also dominate today in Cameroon common colloquial languages French and English .
