The Tilos az Á was an underground cultural meeting place during the transformation phase in Hungary . Between 1990 and 1995 it was located on Kálmán Mikszáth tér in the 8th district in Budapest .

history

The name is taken from the Hungarian version of the children's book Pooh the Bear . The inscription on the broken sign next piglet apartment is ENTER V . In the Hungarian translation this means Tilos az Á . The earlier inscription was (presumably) no entry .

The predecessor of Tilos az À was the Bakony restaurant , which was operated by the Kelet-pesti Vendéglátóipari Vállalat ("East Pest Gastronomy Company"). In 1988 the Association of Free Democrats (SZDSZ) had its seat there and in 1989 the Budapest regional group of Fidesz .

The meeting point was opened on New Year's Eve 1989 by Vladimir Németh (Vova). The basement was the venue for various alternative concerts and a dance house. Frank Zappa performed at the closed “farewell party” that Gábor Demszky organized on the occasion of the Russian troop withdrawal in 1991 . The Zene Ünnepe (“Festival of Music”) was also held there.

In addition to musicians, the bar also offered a place for other cultural workers. In August 1991 the pirate channel Tilos Rádió began broadcasting from there. The Vajdai Vilmos és Szabó Győző zsebszínháza ("Vilmos Vajdai and Győző Szabó Pocket Theater") , the later TÁP Színház ("TÁP Theater") has its origins in the Tilos az À . Péter Halász brought his French friend Jean-Michel Verret , a visual artist from America, to Budapest who, with the help of slide projectors, painted New York street pictures on the back wall of the ground floor.

The police carried out several raids on Tilos az À . As a result, it was closed by the authorities in 1995.
