Round tower and remains of the monastery

Timahoe ( Irish Tigh Mochua ; German  Mochuas Haus ) is a small village with 527 inhabitants (2006) in County Laois in Ireland . It is located in a wide valley, at the intersection of several roads south of Port Laoise .

The last relic of a monastery founded on this site by St. Mochna (d. 657) is a very late built, well-preserved round tower about 29.3 m high from the 12th century.

The dates of death of monks in the old monastery are between 880 and 1007 and the founding of a church is recorded in 1089. The monastery was re-established by the O'More clan in the late Middle Ages. After the Cambro-Norman conquest of Ireland, the monastery and the lands were confiscated. In 1609 Richard Cosby got the lands. The last monk of the monastery was killed in 1650. Probably a member of the Cosby family later turned the medieval church into a castle. Its eastern wall indicates that a 15th century arch was incorporated.
