Timely Comics was an American comic book publisher that later became Marvel Comics .

Timely Comics was founded in New York City in 1939 as Timely Publications , a loose collective name for all comics that were distributed by dime novel publisher Moe "Martin" Goodman . Goodman, who had become known for classic western, science fiction and fantasy pulps, wanted to earn more money with this new medium. One of the first Timely publications was Marvel Comics # 1 (1939), which focused on the heroic android Human Torch (not to be confused with the Marvel hero of the same name ). Soon after, his rival, Namor the Sub-Mariner , made his debut . The new comics sold so well that in 1941 Goodman's comic division was renamed Timely Comics and was able to recruit more and more young artists. a. the later Marvel comic book greats Stan Lee , Jack Kirby and Gene Colan . One of the greatest commercial hits came Timely with Captain America Comics # 1 (March 1941), where cartoonist Jack Kirby lets the eponymous protagonist on the cover picture Adolf Hitler miss the chin. This copy has sold nearly a million times. Other successful series have included a. the teenage comedy Patsy Walker or the Tarzan pastiche Ka-Zar the Great . In 1951 Timely was merged with Goodman's successor, Atlas Comics , which in 1961 became Marvel Comics.
