Titus Afranius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Titus Afranius , Afrenius or Lafrenius was not a Roman and a leader of the Italian allies in the Social War in 90 v. At Mount Falerinus he united with forces of Judacilius and Publius Ventidius and defeated the Legatus Pompeius Strabo and pursued him to Firmum where he was trapped. Judacilius and Ventidius now turned to other theaters of war, as they considered Afranius to be strong enough for the further fight with Pompey. When Strabo heard that the army of Publius Sulpicius Rufus was approaching, he arranged a plan of attack with him. Sulpicius's troops attacked Afranius from behind while Pompey made a sortie out of the city. The battle was evenly balanced until Sulpicius managed to set Afranius camp on fire. Afranius' forces then fled to Asculum without a leader, as he had died during the battle.
