The Tjuleni Islands ( Kazakh Түлен аралдары Tulen araldary , Russian Тюленьи острова ; German Seal Islands ) are a group of five islands in the northern Caspian Sea . They are located at the entrance of Mangyschlak Bay, about 25 kilometers north of Cape Tjub-Karagan, the northwestern end of the Tjub-Karagan Peninsula ( Mangistau Peninsula ).
The archipelago belongs to the Mangistau region of the Republic of Kazakhstan . The total area of the islands is 130 km². The largest and most western island, Kulaly, takes up 68 km². The individual islands are (Russian names):
- Kulaly (west) (68 km²)
- Morskoi (center / north)
- Nowy (New Island) (East)
- Podgorny (southeast) (16.5 km²)
- Rybachi (south)
The main island is Kulaly, which covers more than half of the total area (68 of 130 km²).
Seal hunts were practiced on the islands in the early 20th century .
