Toetoes Bay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Toetoes Bay is the easternmost of three large bays on the coast of Foveaux Strait in New Zealand region Southland , the other two are the Te Waewae Bay and Oreti Beach .

The bay is 20 kilometers long and forms the southern end of the Awarua Plain , a swampy area that extends about 15 kilometers inland. The east end of the bay is near Slope Point, the southernmost point of the South Island and the starting point of the Catlins .

Tiwai Point with its aluminum smelter is located on a peninsula at the west end of the bay on the edge of Bluff Harbor . The lagoon Waituna Lagoon is located halfway on the bay. Near its eastern end, the Mataura River flows into the Foveaux Strait. Immediately before the estuary it flows through another lagoon, Totoes Harbor , where the village of Fortrose is located.
