history
Toggenburger was founded in Lichtensteig in 1863 with an initial equity of 1.5 million Swiss francs.
The Toggenburger Bank was a bank for private customers from Eastern Switzerland . In 1882, the Toggenburger Bank opened a branch in St. Gallen and slowly began to move its business there.
The Swiss Bank Corporation was created in 1912 from the merger of the Toggenburger Bank with the bank in Winterthur. The resulting bank managed assets of around 202 million francs and had equity of 46 million francs. In the years to come, the bank began to move its center from St. Gallen and Winterthur to Zurich. In 1917 the new head office was opened on Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse .
The bank had several names because of the different national languages. In German-speaking Switzerland, the bank was called Swiss Bank Corporation (SBG). The English name for the Schweizerische Bankgesellschaft was Swiss Banking Association. However, this name was changed to Union Bank of Switzerland in 1921 to be closer to the French form Union de Banques Suisses.
