A tolerance ring is an intermediate element for a shaft-hub connection . It is usually made of spring steel and is positioned in a groove between the shaft and the hub , where it creates a non-positive connection between these two elements. Due to its flexibility, a tolerance ring enables both the compensation of manufacturing tolerances and thermal expansion .

In mechanical engineering , tolerance rings play a subordinate role compared to clamping sets or taper lock clamping bushes . They are used, for example, to produce a shaft-hub connection in small electric motors; Their use in this area is specified in the DIN 42020 standard.
