Tomáš Smetánka

Tomáš Smetánka (* 1959 ) is a Czech diplomat.

Career

From 1978 to 1983 Smetánka studied in the Faculty of Oriental and African Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy and Art at Charles University in Prague . He completed a postgraduate course in Arabic from 1983 to 1984 at the University of Cairo . In 1990 he participated in the Times Mirror Fellowship Program for Central European Journalists at the Times Mirror Center in Washington, DC .

Smetánka worked as a translator and interpreter from 1985 to 1988, as a foreign language teacher from 1988 to 1989 and as a journalist and editor-in-chief of Lidové noviny from 1990 to 1993 . In 1993 he started working for the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1994 became Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department. In 1996 Smetánka received his first ambassadorial post in Jordan .

In 2001, Smetánka moved to the People's Republic of China as the Czech ambassador , where he stayed until 2004. Here he was also accredited as the Czech ambassador to North Korea . From 2004 to 2008 Smetánka was the Czech ambassador to South Korea . From 2008 to 2009 he worked as the coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa of the EU Council Presidency in the permanent representation of the Czech Republic to the European Union in Brussels . In 2009 Smetánka returned to Prague and was again director of the Middle East and North Africa Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In October 2011 Smetánka took up his post as the Czech ambassador for Indonesia . Here he had additional accreditations for ASEAN (accreditation: June 27, 2012), Brunei , East Timor and Singapore (accreditation: December 29, 2011). The period of service ended on July 19, 2015.

On November 7, 2019, Smetánka handed over his accreditation as Czech ambassador to Pakistan .

In addition to Czech, Smetánka speaks English, Arabic, French and Russian. He is married and has three children.
