Tom Sawyer Prize

The Tom Sawyer Prize , named after the hero of the novel Tom Sawyer , is a school writing competition held by the city of Rees every two years.

Participation and award

All pupils in grades 5 to 13 can take part anywhere in Germany. The submissions are divided into age groups: 5th and 6th school year, 7th and 8th school year, 9th and 10th school year and 11th to 13th school year. Five prizes will be awarded per age group. The winner in the first place receives 300 euros, the winner in the second 200 euros, and the winners in the other places receive 100 euros. In addition, an anthology with the best stories will be published for the award ceremony. The prize is supported by Stadtsparkasse Emmerich-Rees , RWE and edition elsewhere.

The Tom Sawyer Prize was first announced by the city of Rees in 2003 at the suggestion of the authors Heiner Frost and Andreas Daams under the topic of "School". A total of 272 entries were submitted for this competition, and a book with the 50 best stories was published under the title “Pausenbrot und Liebesbrief”. In 2005, the Tom Sawyer Prize started for the second time with the topic “www”, on which over 160 works were submitted. Selected stories from this competition were published in the paperback Echt.net . In 2008 the competition was announced for the third time. Over 330 stories were submitted on the topic of Oh my God . Finally the book Oh, my God! Selected stories from the youth writes competition - Tom Sawyer Prize of the city of Rees with the stories of the winners and 20 others. In 2010 the theme of the writing competition was Abgefahren !. Over 540 entries were received for this competition; the award ceremony took place on October 31, 2010. The fifth Tom Sawyer Prize on the topic of No Power was announced in March 2012, and 374 entries were received for this. At the sixth competition in 2014, the topic is it still possible? almost 200 contributions were received. The seventh edition of the literary competition took place in 2016, for the topic of Clean! 175 articles were written. In the spring of 2018, the eighth edition of the competition on the topic of "Without me" started, for which over 200 entries were submitted. The motto of the ninth edition in 2020 is "Swap roles."
